Reverse osmosis and forward osmosis fouling: a comparison

چکیده

Abstract Our previously reported exploration (Journal of Membrane Science 565 (2018) 241–253) on the differences between fouling in reverse osmosis (RO) and forward (FO), used alginate as a foulant with initial conditions that ensured starting fluxes were same. That study found for cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane extent fouling, based analysis resistance, was greater when part FO system. Herein, using same methodology, results thin film composite are presented these confirm general conclusion namely accumulation mode is more severe than RO mode. Furthermore specific resistance RO. However examining overall operation including cleaning well this suggests potentially less sensitive to phenomena similar feed materials. This due driving force compensation coming from changing level ICP. Some preliminary work silica particles also reported.

Forward Osmosis as a Pre-treatment to Reverse Osmosis

This paper presents some aspects of forward osmosis coupled with reverse osmosis using a recirculating draw solution, to produce desalinated water or for dewatering/concentrating a feed stream, with some data provided from a number of operational sites. Many of these aspects are applicable to other osmotic processes and provide an insight into where they may be appropriately considered. A compa...

Fouling distribution in forward osmosis membrane process.

Fouling behavior along the length of membrane module was systematically investigated by performing simple modeling and lab-scale experiments of forward osmosis (FO) membrane process. The flux distribution model developed in this study showed a good agreement with experimental results, validating the robustness of the model. This model demonstrated, as expected, that the permeate flux decreased ...

Fouling Prediction in Reverse Osmosis Processes

In recent years, membrane separation processes have successfully established footholds in all areas of chemical separations. Semipermeable membranes are now enhancing and even replacing long-time standard techniques such as distillation and solvent extraction (1). They are also being used in the preparation of purified chemical and biological products as well as the treatment and recovery of ma...

Comparison of the removal of hydrophobic trace organic contaminants by forward osmosis and reverse osmosis.

We compared the rejection behaviours of three hydrophobic trace organic contaminants, bisphenol A, triclosan and diclofenac, in forward osmosis (FO) and reverse osmosis (RO). Using erythritol, xylose and glucose as inert reference organic solutes and the membrane pore transport model, the mean effective pore size of a commercial cellulose-based FO membrane was estimated to be 0.74 nm. When NaCl...

Direct Osmosis for Reverse Osmosis Fouling Control: Principles, Applica- tions and Recent Developments

Reverse osmosis (RO) has been widely applied in various water and wastewater treatment processes as a promising membrane technology. However, RO membrane fouling is a global issue, which limits it operating flux, decreases water production, increases power consumption and requires periodical membranes Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) procedure. This may result in low effectiveness, high cost and adds en...
